Red Mountain Associates is constructing three (3) 3,000 square foot community storm shelters to serve the elementary schools and surrounding community. A shelter is being built at Woodstock, West Blocton, and Randolph Elementary Schools. Each storm shelter consists of poured in place concrete construction, with twelve (12) inch thick walls and an eight (8) inch thick roofing system. Inside the shelters are men and women bathrooms, a mechanical/storage room, and an activity area which is proposed to be used as a half basketball court. Interior walls are eight (8) inch and twelve (12) inch masonry walls. Each shelter has its own self contained 7 ½ ton nominal capacity, dual compressor operation air conditioner, and a 25 kw liquid cooled gas engine generator set by Generac Power Systems, Inc. These shelters are constructed to withstand hurricane force winds and tornados measured up to an F5 on the Fujita Scale (also known as the F-Scale). This project is presently under construction with an anticipated completion date around the beginning of 2008; to be completed ahead of schedule.
